Parent Memories — Help & User Guide

1. How Parent Memories works

Parent Memories is a video journal for the people you love. You record short messages over time — everyday thoughts, birthday wishes, advice for later — and they live on your private timeline. Then two things make it different from a camera roll:

  1. You can share, on your terms. Invite family to watch now, or mark videos "legacy only" so they stay private for the future.
  2. Nothing is ever lost. You check in on a gentle timer. If you ever stop checking in — and don't respond to our reminders — your videos are handed to the one person you chose in advance. Not before, and never to anyone else.

2. Getting started & plans

  1. Create your account (you'll start on a free Premium trial, or choose "Start on the free plan instead").
  2. Click the link in your confirmation email.
  3. Record your first video — it takes about two minutes.
  4. When you're ready, name your trusted person (section 6). This is the heart of the service.

You can switch plans any time in Account settings → Subscription. Your videos are never deleted when you change plans.

5. Checking in

Your check-in timer (30, 60, or 90 days — set in Legacy settings) is how we know you're okay. Simply logging in counts as checking in. If the timer gets close, we email you a one-click check-in link — no password needed.

If the timer runs out, nothing happens suddenly: there's a final grace window (with more emails) before anything is handed over, and even a completed handover can be reversed by contacting support if it was a mistake.

Military members: going on deployment? Turn on the deployment pause in Legacy settings before you leave — your timer stops until your return date, so your account stays safe while you're unreachable.

6. Your trusted person

Your trusted person (and optional backup) is who receives your timeline if something happens to you. Set them in My People.

11. Camera & microphone problems

The most common fix is allowing your browser to use your camera and microphone:

Chrome (desktop)

  1. Click the camera icon in the address bar (right side)
  2. Select Always allow for camera and microphone
  3. Reload the page

If you don’t see the icon: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera and add this site.

Safari (iPhone or Mac)

  1. Tap the AA button in the address bar
  2. Tap Website settings
  3. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow
  4. Reload the page

On iPhone: Settings app → Safari → Camera and Microphone → Allow

Firefox

  1. Click the shield icon in the address bar
  2. Find camera and microphone permissions
  3. Change both to Allow
  4. Reload the page

Or: Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions

Edge

  1. Click the lock icon in the address bar
  2. Find Permissions for this site
  3. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow
  4. Reload the page

Or: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Camera

Other common issues

My camera shows a black screen

Another app (like Zoom or FaceTime) may be using your camera. Close all other apps that use the camera, then reload the page. On iPhone, swipe up to close background apps.

I can see myself but no one can hear me

Check that the correct microphone is selected in the device selector on the recording screen. If you’re using a headset, make sure it’s plugged in and recognised by your device before loading the page.

The recording stops before 10 minutes

This can happen on some older phones if the screen turns off during recording. Keep your screen on while recording, or try the audio-only mode which uses much less battery and processor power.

My upload keeps failing or timing out

Large uploads need a stable connection. Switch to a stronger Wi-Fi network and try again — or try a lower quality setting (480p) which makes much smaller files.

The site won’t load at all

Try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac). If that doesn’t help, clear your browser cache or try a different browser. We support Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox — all updated to the latest version.

I’m on a military base with restricted internet

Some bases block camera and microphone access in browsers. Try the audio-only mode — it uses less bandwidth and may work on restricted networks.
